Half the time “Doctor Sleep” feels like an exercise in King nostalgia. When the “new” plot isn’t going well (Rose’s cabinet full of canisters of vintage “steam,” anyone?), “Doctor Sleep” returns to the Overlook and its patterned carpet, where Danny again rides his Big Wheel, and we revisit the hedge maze and doors Danny’s mad father, Jack, ripped with an ax. One of the reasons this sequence is so disturbing is that Trevor is played by Jacob Tremblay. One of the memorable scenes in the film depicts the abduction of a terrified kid named Bradley Trevor. These include skeletal Grandpa Flick (Carel Struycken aka Lurch of “The Addams Family” films), hillbilly vampire Crow Daddy (Zahn McClarnon), 15-year-old temptress Snakebite Andi (Emily Alyn Lind) and “Barry the Chunk” (Robert Longstreet). The film’s plot is split between Danny, who sobers up and makes friends in a small New England town, and Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), a 13-year-old girl who has the shine and has been targeted by Rose and her band of horribles. Danny gets advice from the ghost of Dick Hallorann (Carl Lumbly, gently invoking the spirit of Scatman Crothers) about how to lock away the ghosts of the Overlook.Īs an adult, beardo Danny (Ewan McGregor) becomes more like his angry alcoholic father and finds himself in bed with a naked single mother, who has vomited in her sleep. The mother and son have survived the Overlook Hotel, although Danny is being stalked in his dreams by the naked hag from Room 237, doing a Freddy Krueger impression. In ill-advised scenes, we meet the young Danny Torrance and his mother, Wendy, with different actors in the roles. Written, directed and edited by Salem-born Mike Flanagan of “Oculus” fame, who honed his skills making the King-based “Gerald’s Game,” the grueling, two-and-half-hour “Doctor Sleep” begins with a little girl being attacked by Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson, hamming it up with a very fluid American accent) and her band of traveling child serial killers, who “eat” (i.e., inhale) the “steam” of tortured children with special powers, similar to the “shine” of “The Shining.”
